FAACCE

Standards of Excellence

Six criteria. One institutional standard.

Every work considered for verification by the FAACCE Curatorial Council is measured against six criteria. They exist to honour creators and to protect audiences.

I

Originality

The work must be the authored expression of its creator — not a reproduction, not a derivative, not a mass-produced object.

II

Artistic Excellence

Quality of vision, composition, technique and execution, judged against the highest contemporary standards of the discipline.

III

Cultural Significance

A meaningful relationship to African cultural memory, contemporary life or the lived experience of its creator.

IV

Craftsmanship

Mastery of medium and material — the evident hand and discipline of a maker who has done the work to know their craft.

V

Documentation

A clear record of origin, materials, process and intent — accompanied by the creator's own account of the work.

VI

Ethical Practice

Ethical sourcing of materials, fair treatment of collaborators and respectful representation of cultural subjects and communities.

For Creators

Read the Standards before you submit. They are not gatekeeping — they are the language we share with you about what excellent work looks like.
