Story behind the work
Mokoena began this work after spending six months mapping the routes her family travelled during the forced removals of the 1960s. Each line is a sibling, an aunt, a cousin scattered by Group Areas — re-drawn into one continuous breath.
A topography of memory built from charcoal, gold leaf and old township maps, layered into a single, almost cartographic surface.
